There has been a lot of debate on how much water you should drink before, with, and after meals. Let’s know in detail.
The issue here is threefold:

- Is it better to drink water while eating?
- Why shouldn’t we drink water after meals?
Experts say, “It takes about two hours to digest what you eat. Food travels through your esophagus to your stomach, then into your colon before exiting your system. Our gastric system has a fixed liquid-solid ratio.

If you drink water before a meal, you are not only diluting what you eat by disturbing the liquid component, you are also speeding up the digestion process.
Ayurveda strongly denies it. When you drink water before a meal, you are diluting the gastric fluids in your stomach that are responsible for digesting your food and turning it into energy. That’s why Ayurveda advises that you should avoid drinking water a few hours before meals.

This may come as a shock to many, but Ayurveda recommends drinking water while having meals. Make sure you don’t ‘drink’ but at least ‘sip’ of water. This will soften the food so that it can be broken down into smaller sized granules that are easier to digest. Eating something spicy or oily can make you thirsty because drinking water while eating can quench your thirst.

By drinking water right after your meal, you are interfering with the natural time it takes to digest your food. It is essential to maintain some gap after meals as it also helps in the absorption of essential nutrients.
It takes about 2 hours to digest what you eat. Food travels through your esophagus to your stomach, then to your intestine before exiting your system. If you drink water immediately after a meal, the food reaches the intestine in less time than the time it should have taken to pass from the stomach to the intestine. Due to this, the body does not get the full benefit of the nutrients present in the food.
Drinking water right after a meal has been linked to poor digestive health in Ayurveda. Ayurveda believes that the fire of the stomach helps in digestion of food. If you drink water from above immediately after eating food, then the fire of the stomach becomes calm and there is a problem in digestion.
That’s why Ayurveda says that water should not be drunk for 30 minutes after eating food. In these 30 minutes, your system moves to the next stage of digestion.
